The reports suggest that a proposed settlement has been reached between the U.S. Department of Justice and the estate of Ashli Babbitt, who was shot dead by a Capitol Police officer during the January 6, 2021, insurrection. A lawsuit for wrongful death amounting to $30 million had been filed against Babbitt’s estate on behalf of an unarmed supporter of Trump for alleged excessive force when she tried to enter the barricaded hallway through which the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory was underway. Politically charged opinions about police accountability and alleged bias in law enforcement have ignited as the actual figure for the proposed settlement remains speculative.
