On Thursday (Jan. 2), the ascendant Tampa rapper released the highly anticipated music video for “Denial Is a River,” a standout cut from her breakout mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal. Co-directed by Carlos Acosta and James Mackel, the “Denial” clip finds Doechii calling on classic Black sitcoms such as Family Matters — the trailer used the show’s beloved “As Days Go By” theme song — to recount the tumultuous last few years of her life and career. A few days ago, Doechii teased the “Denial” music video with a pair of skits drawing on soap operas and telenovelas that arrived amidst a string of performances at NPR’s Tiny Desk, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and Camp Flog Gnaw.
