The Mary Poppins star was born in 1925 to parents Hazel Victoria and Loren Wayne “Cookie” Van Dyke. “I tried to be a good role model to my children, but I was an alcoholic for 25 years, which inevitably impacted on family life,” Dick said in an August 2016 interview with TheGuardian. “We were too broke to get married, but a radio producer offered to pick up the tab and send us on honeymoon if we got hitched on his show,” Dick recalled to The Guardian in August 2016.
