The Substance, which stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, has been billed as the feminist horror film of the year - but cinemagoers have been left horrified by its gory scenes.

Ghost star Demi takes on the role of Elisabeth Sparkle, an ageing actress who is ruthlessly fired from her fitness show job when she turns 50 by her unprincipled boss, played by Dennis Quaid. When the declining star is offered a black market drug by a young, attractive nurse that promises to rejuvenate her, she seizes the opportunity, despite its horrifying conditions.
