Dame Maggie Smith was 'surprised' to still be alive as she filmed Downton Abbey before death at 89


Actress Dame Maggie Smith, who played Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the hit period drama Downton Abbey expressed her surprise at her own longevity

It was confirmed on Friday, 27 September, that the star – who played the sharp-tongued Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in six TV series and then two movies – had sadly died, at the age of 89.
