Classic Film Champ Thierry Frémaux Celebrates the 130th Anniversary of Cinema With Feature-Length Lumière Film

The Cannes honcho and classic film champ's feature-length 'Lumière! The Adventure Continues' assembles nearly 100 early Lumière films for modern eyes.

The Lyon-based museum is built on the site where, on March 19, 1895, Auguste and Louis Lumière debuted the invention they later christened the Cinematograph, recording a crowd of workers leaving the family’s photographic supply factory. I was surprised to see the Lumières testing certain techniques in 1895, like fixing a camera to the front of a boat or a train and filming as it moved, something I associate more with F.W. I wanted to share the beauty of these films and, by presenting them according to theme, to make it clear how, little by little, something of a poetic and cinematic language took shape.
