In an exclusive interview Chubby Checker talks about finally being voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the styles of dance he popularized.
Checker had not made a major point of lamenting his MIA status every year since the seeming snub became apparent, but he did make his feelings clear in a public way nearly a quarter-century ago. When Variety caught up to Checker for an exclusive first interview after his Hall of Fame news this week, he was on his custom tour bus in the driveway outside his home in New Jersey, waiting to take off for his next set of concerts. Now, there was that controversy back in the day [laughs], where I told them that, because of what we’ve done in the music industry, the Hall should erect a statue of Chubby Checker in its courtyard inviting everyone in to rock ‘n’ roll.
