Chinese audiences turned out in decent numbers over the May Day holiday weekend, propelling CMC Pictures’ “ The Dumpling Queen ” to the top of the box office. The film, which stars Ma Li and is directed by Andrew Lau, tells the real-life story of Zang Jianhe from Qingdao who builds a dumpling empire in Hong Kong after being stranded there in the late 1970s. The 4K version of Studio Ghibli’s classic “Princess Mononoke,” the 1997 anime epic directed by Miyazaki Hayao, landed in fourth place with $6.1 million.
