Charlie Hunnam to play murderer Ed Gein in Monster season 3 - after Evan Peters' Jeffrey Dahmer backlash

Charlie Hunnam will play his darkest role to date as murderer and necrophile Ed Gein in season 3 of Ryan Murphy's Monster.

Murphy, 58, announced the Sons of Anarchy star, 44, will take on the terrifying role during a promotional event in LA for Monster Season 2, which focuses on the Menendez brothers' murder of their parents, per Variety. Gein's life has inspired a number of horror characters including Norman Bates from Alfred Hitchcock's classic film Psycho, Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Buffalo Bill in the Silence of the Lambs. His father was an unemployed alcoholic and his mother was a highly religious Lutheran who held a domineering presence in Gein's life and tried to preach to her children about the dangers of drinking and women, who she believed were tools of the devil.
