Charli XCX Denies Referencing Taylor Swift in ‘Sympathy Is a Knife’

Charli XCX said that ‘Brat’ track ‘Sympathy Is a Knife’ is about her own self-doubt rather than anyone specific, like Taylor Swift

Fans seized on the song as a possible Swift diss track because of the lyrics, “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show / Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick.” In another verse, Charli sings, “’Cause I couldn’t even be her if I tried / I’m opposite, I’m on the other side.” In January 2022, Swift got into a social media argument with musician Damon Albarn after he claimed she shouldn’t call herself a songwriter if she isn’t the only creative credited on a track. 1 spot in the U.K. to Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, some Brazilian fans began chanting, “Taylor is dead,” during a Charli DJ set in São Paulo.
