Cannes Chief Calls David Fincher ‘One of the Most Important Filmmakers in the World in Recent Years’
Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Fremaux said filmmakers shouldn't compromise on theatrical in a conversation with Ruben Ostlund at Goteborg.
Fremaux talked about the winning theatrical strategy of streamers such as Apple, which presented Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” in competition and had it released in theaters via Paramount. The rule came in the aftermath of a scandal that erupted after the Cannes Film Festival selected two Netflix movies in competition in 2017, causing a “big conflict” with local exhibitors, along with the rest of the French industry. “The awareness is not so much about the cast and so on, but for instance in ‘The Square’ I made a scene where there’s a monkey performance artist who is going crazy among people dressed in tuxedos at a big dinner.
