Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Resigns: ‘If I’m Having to Fight Internal Battles, I Cannot Be the Best Option’ in Upcoming Election
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation, though he will remain in the position until a new leader is chosen.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as the head of the country’s Liberal Party, though he will remain PM until a new leader is chosen. Recent polls have shown Trudeau lacking support — with just 22% of Canadians approving of his leadership — and the Liberal Party was projected to be overtaken by Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative sect in an election that must occur by October. Trudeau has faced heightened scrutiny since December, when he attempted to demote finance minister Chrystia Freeland after she opposed his spending proposals and plan to deal with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s threat of increased tariffs on Canadian goods.
