Starring Seaon Penn, the film was based on a book he wrote after spending a year undercover as a student at Clairemont High School in San Diego. He would then go on to direct such classics as Say Anything, Singles and Jerry Maguire featuring Tom Cruise and Renée Zellweger, which was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. The film that would ultimately land him his first Oscar was the autobiographical pic Almost Famous, starring Kate Hudson and Billy Crudup, which is based on his experiences as a teen writer for Rolling Stone and won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
