Bruce Springsteen: ‘I’m not the best company inside my head’
The Boss reveals the deeply personal stories behind his seven ‘lost’ albums, his fears for America and how he fights off the spectre of depression
If LA Garage Sessions ’83 had been released instead of Born in the USA, as Springsteen originally planned, life, rock and a 1980s trend for white T-shirts and Levi’s jeans with red baseball caps sticking out of the back pocket would have been very different indeed. Springsteen’s ranch house is a proper family home, with its well-thumbed books and air of rustic warmth, even if the children have gone elsewhere now: Evan, 34, is a music programmer for Apple, Jessica, 33, is a professional equestrian and Sam, 31, is a New York fireman. Age might be a factor in getting the lost albums out now, even if Springsteen seems pretty healthy: a product of never taking drugs, working out regularly, eating only one meal a day (dinner, plus a bit of fruit in the morning: “Keeps me mean and lean”) and having a drive that remains undimmed.
