British Swimmer Luke Greenbank Disqualified for Breaking Surprising Rule
Team GB swimmer Luke Greenbank was disqualified in the men’s 200-metre event at the 2024 Paris Olympics despite finishing the race first.
According to World Aquatics, competitive swimming’s international governing body, swimmers participating in the backstroke can’t be fully submerged more than 15 meters after starting the race or completing a turn. Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira was sent home after being caught leaving the Olympic Village with another teammate, Gabriel Santos, after the opening ceremony on July 26. “Gabriel Santos was punished with a warning and athlete Ana Carolina Vieira, with the penalty of dismissal from the delegation,” the press release concluded.
