Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan admits she didn't know if the Regency drama would be popular and says she was 'daunted' by her racy sex scenes as she takes the lead in season three
WARNING: SPOILERS. The actress, 37, has taken centre stage as Penelope Featherington in the third series of the racy Regency drama, which follows her romance with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).
Posing for a stunning magazine photoshoot, she told Marie Claire Australia: 'I remember reading the books and thinking, "Geez, these are really steamy, that's gonna be a lot," but we didn't know if the show would get picked up after the first season. The candelabras, the footmen in their finery, the chinless drones in silk waistcoats, the floral arrangements like all of Kew Gardens crammed into a vase, the plumed horses, the diamond-studded pineapples, the rosy-cheeked urchins and wide-eyed housemaids, the villainous lawyers, the hot-air balloon flights, the sheer brilliance of the ballgowns – all shot through with intrigue, jealousy and lust. Aramide Tinubu: Coughlan and Newton have always had a beautiful rapport, but watching Colin realize he desires Penelope sexually creates a sparkling tension throughout Part 1 that threatens to burst off the screen'.
