Scandalous gossip, forbidden romance and lavish Regency costumes - not to mention those outlandish wigs… Bridgerton is back next week. SARAH RAINEY reveals its secrets.

Jonathan Bailey, who plays Anthony Bridgerton, explains the logistics: ‘If there are two people doing a sex scene, the rule is that they must have three barriers separating them, and there are certain acts where a half-inflated netball can allow for movement without having to connect physically.’ She won hearts with her portrayal of Penelope, whom she calls ‘a supporting character, the oddball in the corner’ and was revealed, at the end of season one, to be Lady Whistledown, the society gossip who narrates the series (with a voiceover by Julie Andrews). Celebrity make-up artist Pat McGrath, whose clients include Naomi Campbell, Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid, worked closely with the hair and beauty department to devise Regency-appropriate looks for the cast.
