Blue Lights' 'beautifully tense' second series is lauded by critics for 'skipping effortlessly from comedy to breakneck drama' as the police thriller returns with 'first-rate' opener


The BBC series returned to screens on Monday night after its debut run became a sleeper hit, and has already been renewed for series three and four.

Writing in Digital Spy, Rebecca Cook said: 'When we do start to jivy along, Blue Lights is back to the careful balancing act of office gallows humour, the legacy of sectarian violence and punishing police work – as well as the newer component this season of the rampant drugs trade. Written by the team behind Novichok drama The Salisbury Poisonings, Blue Lights stars Sherlock actress Siân Brooke as Grace, a single mum and ex-social worker who's decided to switch careers in mid-life to become a probationary cop. 'When we do start to jivy along, Blue Lights is back to the careful balancing act of office gallows humour, the legacy of sectarian violence and punishing police work – as well as the newer component this season of the rampant drugs trade.
