Gates went on to say that the controversies surrounding Epstein prior to his 2019 arrest and subsequent death in August of the same year have made him more cautious about meeting new people now. “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” Melinda wrote in a statement shared that May. In an interview with The Times of London published on Saturday, January 25, Gabes described his divorce from French Gates as “the mistake I regret the most.”
