The incident led to suggestions that the Berlinale, which has always prided itself as a safe space open to the debates of the day, was no longer a bastion of freedom of speech and different political perspectives. “But as challenging as it’s been, and I mean this really, honestly, it’s also been really joyous and really, pleasurable and a real privilege to get to watch the films that we’ve just talked about here and work with our teams to put together a program. Tuttle also addressed news of the Berlinale’s state funding boost following an announcement by the German Ministry of Culture on the eve of the press conference of an additional $1.9M (€1.9M), bringing the overall budget to $12.8M (€12.8M).
