X/@bennyjohnson From the vantage point of a conservative, this shot of video really sparked online debate after Benny Johnson uploaded a flashback to 2020 with thousands of uncontrolled illegal fireworks going off from all over Los Angeles while there was an actual government ban in place. Others were alarmed, citing facts: “The US Consumer Product Safety Commission reported approximately 14,700 fireworks-related injuries and 11 deaths in 2024.” Another person remarked sarcastically, “They can’t be trusted with matches, much less fireworks.” Yet, the responses themselves reveal some much more complex local realities beneath that partisan rhetoric: for instance, longstanding regional traditions of fireworks use that antedate these recent political battles.
