Beastie Boys Reach Settlement with Chili's over 'Unauthorized' Ad Use of 'Sabotage'

Beastie Boys and Chili's settled their lawsuit over the unauthorized use of the 1994 song "Sabotage" in a 2022 commercial. The band sued the restaurant chain's parent company in July 2024 on claims of copyright infringement.

"The plaintiffs do not license ‘Sabotage’ or any of their other intellectual property for third-party product advertising purposes, and deceased Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch included a provision in his will prohibiting such uses." Yauch, who died in 2012 after being diagnosed with cancer, famously noted in his will that “in no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes," according to the Associated Press. They previously sued the makers of Monster Energy drink for the unauthorized use of their songs "Sabotage," "So What'cha Want," "Make Some Noise," "Pass the Mic" and "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" in a commercial.
