BBC's Ian Hislop shares police update after 'gunshot' incident in London taxi

The Metropolitan Police have released a statement after an incident involving Ian Hislop's taxi led to fears a shot had been fired - with the police now investigating a 'mechanical fault'

Ian Hislop, the sharp-witted editor of satirical magazine Private Eye, has given an update following an alarming incident where the rear window of his cab suddenly shattered. The journalist and TV presenter hasn't held back in expressing his thanks to the diligent officers and "all who contacted me" over the scare which began with a driver's call at about 10.10am, claiming his vehicle had taken damage from a supposed shot while stuck in traffic on Dean Street in the centre of London. Ian Hislop, 64, has long played a pivotal role on the BBC's panel show Have I Got News for You, a staple since its inception in 1990, and has steered the satirical magazine Private Eye as its editor since 1986.
