Athena's iconic cheeky tennis girl unrecognisable showing face for first time - 47 years since era-defining poster
Retail chain Athena sold millions of copies of the iconic poster showing a female tennis player lifting up her skirt, but it was years until the woman unveiled her identity
Fiona unveiled her identity in 1989, revealing she is 'Athena' from the tennis poster (Image: Getty)She decided to reveal her identity in 2011 in order to help promote an exhibition on lawn tennis as a subject in art, which was held at Birmingham's Barber Institute of Fine Arts. On why she'd never unveiled her identity until that point, Fiona told MailOnline: "I’ve never gone out of my way to court attention, and have declined being photographed publicly since then, because I am quite a private person." Meanwhile, photographer Martin, who passed away in 2010, earned an estimated £250,000 in royalty payments as he retained the copyrights when he Sold the image rights to Athena.
