On the eve of ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s screening at the Cannes Film Festival, all five of the franchise’s directors reminisce.
And with a Cannes Film Festival premiere, the franchise’s farewell is set for plenty of fanfare — in contrast to the way its seventh movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, was stunted by the almost simultaneous Barbenheimer phenomenon two years ago. They recall shooting such missions impossible as breaking into the CIA and Kremlin headquarters, running alongside the exterior of the world’s tallest building in Dubai, hanging off the side of a cargo jet, and motorcycle sequences executed by Cruise that would have most actors calling for a stuntman, or their agent. While a gentle soul — Woo quietly endured the indignity of Jean-Claude Van Damme locking him out of the edit room and making his own cut of his first Hollywood film Hard Target — the filmmaker had found a way to turn a preposterous premise into the action hit Face/Off with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.
