Archie Madekwe on Going From ‘Saltburn’ Survivor to Preyed-Upon Music Star in ‘Lurker’: It ‘Feels Tense and Anxiety-Inducing, but Is Laced With So Much Comedy’
The rising Brit describes how he was spotted by first-time director Alex Russell while in a Los Angeles coffee shop and even sang on the film
At dinner while the film was still in development, the filmmaker turned to his two young stars and said, “Look, I’m going to be so lost on this journey and am probably going to have to lean on you guys so much — I’m going to ask you so many questions … I’m gonna get a lot wrong and I’ll need you to hold my hand.” Then came “Saltburn.” Fennell’s buzzy, TikTok-friendly romp through the British upper classes saw him play Jacob Elordi’s mistrusting American cousin — who eventually falls foul of Barry Keoghan’s scheming outsider. With “Lurker,” which was received hugely well out of Sundance and picked up by Mubi for the U.S. and Focus Features for the rest of the world ahead of its international premiere in Berlin, more people will get to see what Madekwe can do — this time as a fully-fledged indie leading man.
