Apple Slapped With $2 Billion EU Fine Over ‘Abusive’ Streaming Music App Restrictions After Complaint by Spotify; Apple Says It Will Appeal
The EU fined Apple about $1.95 billion for "abusing its dominant position on the market for the distribution of music streaming apps."
The EU on Monday said its investigation into Apple, which was prompted by a complaint by Spotify, found that Apple applied restrictions on app developers preventing them from informing iOS users about alternative and cheaper music subscription services available outside of the app, which is illegal under EU antitrust rules. They claimed the digital music market had stalled, and that Apple was holding competitors back. We’re proud to play a key role supporting Spotify’s success — as we have for developers of all sizes, from the App Store’s earliest days,” Apple said in the statement.
