His announcement followed discussions with Jolie’s father, the Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight, who has been named by Trump as a “special ambassador” to Hollywood, responsible for returning American film-making to its “golden era”. Philippa Childs, of the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union, which has 40,000 members, said: “The government must move swiftly to defend this vital sector and support the freelancers who power it as a matter of essential national economic interest.” Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, claiming that the “Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death” because “countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States”.
