Andor’s Mon Mothma Dances So She Won’t Scream
“She’s digesting the reality that you can’t get through rebellion without having blood on your hands,” says star Genevieve O’Reilly.
As played by Caroline Blakiston, Mon commanded respect, but her main purpose was to solemnly reveal how many Bothans died getting the Death Star plans. That’s hardly the case in Andor, in which creator Tony Gilroy gives Mon a story line central to his series about rebellion, fascism, and the masks one must wear to fight for the greater good. It’s not something O’Reilly could have imagined two decades ago, when she was first cast to play the Rebel leader in Revenge of the Sith — a glorified Easter egg for fans of the original trilogy that was ultimately cut from the film.
