America Ferrera turns 40 - how Barbie actress went from humble beginnings to Oscar nomination


As Barbie star America Ferrera turns 40 we're taking a look back at her life and acting career, which shot her to fame following her debut in the 2002 film Real Women Have Curves

Born in 1984 to Honduran immigrants América Griselda Ayes and Carlos Gregorio Ferrera, she was the youngest of six children and has been open about times at school when she went hungry as the family struggled financially. America tied the knot with husband Ryan Piers Williams in 2011 (Image: Instagram/America Ferrera)The actress made her film debut in 2002 comedy drama Real Women Have Curves, and went on to land one of the lead roles in Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants. Just months after opening up about her experience, America became a founding member of Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, an organisation that raises money to support victims of sexual assault and harassment.
