Amazon is the latest retailer offering dupes of Hermés’s iconic Birkin and Kelly purses, originals of which can cost upwards of $15,000 — that is if you get off the brand’s infamously long waitlists, which are often not expedited even for the most A-list of celebrities. Discourse surrounding the accessibility of the luxury French house accessory reached a fever pitch late last year, when Walmart launched their own resale program for designer items, in addition to affordable dupes. The large tote was first designed in 1984 by the British-French actor and fashion icon Jane Birkin, who made her first sketch for the brand on a flight from Paris to London after complaining that most bags weren’t suitable for her needs as a working mom.
