Amazon CEO Says AI Will Lead to Layoffs and ‘Change the Way Our Work Is Done,’ Tells Employees: ‘Be Curious About AI, Educate Yourself’

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told employees generative AI will change the way they work and will lead to a lower number of workers overall.

It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company.” Nine months ago, Jassy informed Amazon staffers they would be expected to report to the office five days per week, so the company will be “better set up to invent, collaborate, and be connected enough to each other and our culture to deliver the absolute best for customers and the business.” The company has more than 1,000 generative AI services and applications in progress or built “but at our scale, that’s a small fraction of what we will ultimately build,” the CEO said.
