This phenomenon is thousands of years old.

Cousteau declared it one of the top five scuba diving spots in the world and came to the conclusion that the phenomenon was created thousands of years ago when rising ocean levels led to the series of caves to become flooded. Apparently, the hole is almost impossible to miss as the dark circle provides an obvious contrast from the lighter surrounding waters as well as the circular bounds of the Lighthouse Reef.
