Allison Russell Joined in a ‘Superlover’ Duet by Annie Lennox, Making Her First Vocal Appearance on Record in Seven Years

Allison Russell is teasing her next project with the single and video 'Superlover,' joined in a duet by Annie Lennox,

The song was produced by DimStar and features playing from Wendy & Lisa and from Russell’s Rainbow Coalition band, which is backing her on tour this spring. She sang it throughout much of 2023 as the opening act on Hozier’s arena tour, amid setlists otherwise filled with material from her two acclaimed solo albums, “Outside Child” and “The Returner.” But prior to enterting the public spotlight in such a big way, she also recorded a version of it in the late 2010s with her duo Birds of Chicago, with partner JT Nero. In February, Russell recently wrapped up a run on Broadway playing Persephone in “Hadestown.” Talking with Variety about that role, she also discussed “Superlover” and how the collaboration with Lennox grew out of a friendship that began on stage backing up Joni Mitchell in concert.
