Young women coppers have a tough enough time of it, what with sexist colleagues, dinosaur bosses, organised crime and murderers on the loose.
Not content with wading into a political scandal, mum Molly Marshall (Lorraine Ashbourne) was urging Jo to break the law on her first official investigation, to identify the body of a man found bludgeoned to death in a lift. On her first day in the job, novice sleuth Jo stole files from a fellow officer’s computer, extracted data on the mystery man’s DNA, uploaded it to a genealogy database while claiming to be the victim himself, and then told his sister over the phone that he was in fact dead. Peter Capaldi is outstandingly enigmatic as DCI Daniel Hegarty, once the leading light of a Metropolitan Police murder squad but now reduced to moonlighting as a chauffeur and bodyguard to top up his pension fund.
