ADRIAN THRILLS: Pop's gothic greats have returned after 16 years with... a gloriously gloomy Cure comeback

ADRIAN THRILLS: When one of the world's biggest rock bands takes a 16-year sabbatical between albums, it's reasonable to expect something special once they return and The Cure deliver just that.

Smith’s vocals don’t arrive until mid-way through the seven- minute opening track, Alone, but an air of doomed romance has already been well established thanks to a rich arrangement led by symphonic strings and the hearty thwack of Jason Cooper’s drums. With his singing bolstered by co-producer Ian Grimble’s special effects, there are nods to the sun-dappled Californian rock of Crosby, Stills & Nash, while the title track features actress Anna Friel on backing vocals. FRESH from his cameo as a droll radio DJ on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, the Texan grandee gently rolls back the years on an album — his 153rd — that sees him tackle songs from the classic rock canon and give them the air of standards.
