‘Wonka’ Stays Atop U.K., Ireland Box Office, ‘Poor Things’ Makes Strong Debut


Warner Bros.' 'Wonka' continued its reign over the U.K. and Ireland box office with $2.8 million.

Among the new releases, opening mid-week on Jan. 17 is the keenly anticipated “Mean Girls,” starring Angourie Rice, Auli’i Cravalho, Reneé Rapp, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Christopher Briney, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Tina Fey and Tim Meadows, which Paramount is opening wide across more than 300 locations. Award season contenders opening on the Friday include Signature Entertainment’s “The End We Start From,” directed by Mahalia Belo, starring Jodie Comer, Joel Fry, Katherine Waterston, Gina McKee and Mark Strong, and Universal’s Alexander Payne film “The Holdovers,” featuring Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa. Central City Media is releasing acclaimed Hong Kong drama “In Broad Daylight,” which scored several nominations at the Golden Horse and Shanghai film festivals.
