Schiff was Toby Ziegler, the cranky Communications Director, who is often seen as Bartlet’s liberal conscious and author of his major speeches, before he is fired from the administration in later seasons for leaking classified information about a secret space shuttle. Its first season, which ended with an assassination attempt at Rosslyn, Virginia, scored nine Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, beating shows such as ER, Law & Order, The Practice and The Sopranos. Cregg, and Mary McCormack, who played Deputy National Security Advisor Commander Kate Harper in seasons five through seven, recently wrote a book – What’s Next: A Backstage Pass to The West Wing, Its Cast and Crew, and Its Enduring Legacy of Service.
