‘The Last of Us’ Composers on Scoring Joel’s Big Moment, the Jackson Invasion and Capturing Abby’s Anger Without Making Her a Villain

"The Last of Us" composers David Fleming and Gustavo Santaolalla had a balancing act with the siege of Jackson and Joel's death.

When composer David Fleming realized that this week’s episode of “The Last of Us” would feature both the bloody siege of Jackson and Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) death at the hands of the vengeful Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), he knew that creating music to weave through each “monumental” sequence would require a careful “dance.” During Joel and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) heartbreaking final goodbye, he weaves in themes that had been used in prior episodes to create the “emotional peak” of that gut-punch moment. While the decision to kill Joel is brutally difficult to watch, neither Fleming nor Santaolalla approached scoring Abby’s moments like a traditional villain.
