‘The Batman’ Spinoff Shows on Gotham PD and Arkham Got Dropped After HBO Execs Wanted to ‘Lean Harder into Marquee Characters,’ Says Matt Reeves

HBO executives told Matt Reeves to focus on "marquee characters" when expanding "The Batman" universe into television.

Reeves is expanding the universe he launched in “The Batman” into television starting with this fall’s “ The Penguin,” in which Colin Farrell reprises his role as the eponymous Gotham City gangster. “The Batman” spinoff series centered on the Gotham police department was announced in July 2020 and backed by Reeves and “Boardwalk Empire” creator Terence Winter, who then exited the project in November and was replaced by Joe Barton in January 2021. “The Penguin” is set one week after the conclusion of “The Batman.” Head writer and showrunner Lauren LeFranc told EW that the show is “the bridge between the two films,” referring to Reeves’ upcoming “The Batman 2.” That sequel won’t land in theaters until 2026.
