‘The Apprentice’: Read The Screenplay That Takes On The Origin Story Of Donald Trump

The Apprentice is a origin story of sorts centering on the formative years of Donald Trump, with a script by journalist Gabriel Sherman.

Their relationship provides the anchor for the film, an origin story of sorts (“inspired by true events,” per the script’s title page) as Trump begins his rise. Eventually the idea came to him that Trump’s rise was linked directly to his mentor, Cohn, who “taught his young acolyte how to speak and how to use all his lessons in the dark art of getting power,” Sherman says. Both Strong and executive producer Amy Baer have referenced Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein — the mad scientist who creates a monster — in how they thought of the script, which at times is a sympathetic portrayal of the ambitious Trump.
