‘The Age of Pryor Has Never Ended’: New Box Set Captures Richard Pryor’s Legendary Run

Richard Pryor's legendary run is chronicled in the new box set 'I Hope I’m Funny: The Warner Albums (1974-1983).'

That N****r’s Crazy, which was recently placed on Rolling Stone ‘s list of the 74 Best Albums of 1974, was recorded at Don Cornelius’ Soul Train nightclub in San Francisco in February of that year. The album became a cultural phenomenon, as Pryor shattered boundaries and offered hilarious — and incredibly real — commentary on sex, drugs, and race. Scott Saul, an English professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and the author of the 2014 biography Becoming Richard Pryor, wrote the box set’s liner notes.
