‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ Review: Broadway’s Unwieldy Stage Prequel Delivers Visual Spectacle
Based on the Netflix hit, this unwieldy stage story delivers, big time, on impressive visual spectacle.
With the Broadway arrival of “ Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” a stage prequel to the popular Netflix series, comes the question: Will this stand-alone tale appeal — and then satisfy — audiences beyond its fan base? Even in the midst of morphing into something quite extraordinary, McCartney manages to center the show with a sense of human reality, especially as he tries to bind, then save, Henry’s friend Patty (a new major character, honestly played Gabrielle Nevaeh). A school production of the symbolic ‘40s play “Dark of the Moon” and comic book references try to echo the series’ Dungeons & Dragons cosplay elements, but they only manage to overstuff the unwieldy plot.
