‘Strange Darling’ Filmmaker On How His Twisty Horror Tale Came To Life

"Strange Darling" writer-director J.T. Mollner discusses what went into his twisty serial killer thriller as the movie opens in theaters.

Expertly shot on 35mm film by acclaimed actor Giovanni Ribisi in his first feature as a cinematographer, Strange Darling could best be described as a '70s-style serial killer thriller that largely focuses on two characters: The Demon (Kyle Gallner) and The Lady (Willa Fitzgerald). Strange Darling kicks off with a harrowing scene that shows The Demon chasing down The Lady with a shotgun, which viewers will eventually learn is connected to how their lurid one-night went horribly awry. Mollner said one of the toughest sells with Strange Darling surrounded the film’s non-linear format, a crafty storytelling technique that has been done in the past by Quentin Tarantino in his movie masterpiece Pulp Fiction.
