‘Snow White,’ ‘Aicha,’ ‘Abdo and Saneya’ Among Bold Films From Arab World at Red Sea Film Festival

Red Sea Film Festival showcases a flurry of bold Arab independent films including 'Snow White,' 'Aicha' and 'To a Land Unknown.'

Red Sea’s opening film is a Saudi-Egyptian coproduction, “The Tale Of Daye’s Family,” about an 11-year-old Nubian albino boy who travels to Cairo to participate in an Egyptian version of “The Voice.” The lead actress Aseel Omran is a major influencer in Saudi Arabia, with 7 million followers. “This year we have the very interesting comedy ‘Lail Nahar,’ about an opera singer who has become very famous through social media but risks being cancelled because people claim he’s racist. Although many Saudi films are mining stories from the past there are important exceptions, such as the social media satire “Fever Dream,” by the Godus Brothers, with many visual effects, that screened at Red Sea last year.
