‘Smash’ Writers on Going Meta for Their Broadway Musical, Honoring Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Difficult’ Legacy and Their ‘The Princess Bride’ Adaptation

In the first two weeks that “ Smash ” has played to crowded theaters on Broadway, the behind-the-scenes process around the show about the making of “Bombshell: The Marilyn Monroe Story” — adapted from the NBC cult-favorite series that ran from 2012-2013 — has already proven to be just a little meta. Since “the audience has a collective personality,” reactions to a comedic show like “Smash” can vary drastically on their daily reports without much middle ground, says Martin. One of the really nice things that producer Steven Spielberg said is, “This is one of the most complete portraits of Marilyn Monroe.” It hadn’t really occurred to us but I think that’s true because she even says in the show: “I’m not difficult.
