‘Olmo’ Director Fernando Eimbcke on How Plan B-Produced Film Finds Laughter in Mexican-American Family Strife

Produced by Plan B and Michel Franco, "Olmo" tracks a Mexican-American clan in the 1970'S with an irreverence pulled from Hollywood teen comedies.

In “Olmo,” those kin ties rope a frustrated 14-year into staying home to look after his multiple sclerosis struck father one Saturday night – the very eve of a raging house party that could connect the boy with his longtime crush. His subsequent features “Lake Tahoe” and “Club Sandwich” won prizes and acclaim in Berlin, Toronto and San Sebastian – including the Spanish festival’s top honor, the Golden Shell. After developing a number of projects in the ensuing years, the filmmaker began work on “Olmo” at the request of producers Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner from Plan B(which became part of Mediawan in late 2022).
