There’s a great African proverb - ‘the child who is rejected from the village will burn it down to feel its warmth’ - and it’s that notion that if you're going to keep putting someone in the naughty corner, if you’re going to keep telling someone they’re not acceptable and making experiences inaccessible and if you’re going to keep marginalising them then how can you expect that person to become a shining beacon in their society. I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to articulate and understand why I was really good at doing some things - like being married for 20 years and being a loving parent - but why we never have toilet roll in the house!
