‘Mid-Century Modern’ Isn’t a Gay ‘Golden Girls’: Nathan Lane on Why Multicam Sitcoms Like It Deserve More Respect
Nathan Lane on his new sitcom 'Mid-Century Modern,' Gene Hackman in 'The Birdcage,' and the risks of a multicam show.
In his latest project, “Mid-Century Modern” — the new Hulu series from “Will & Grace” co-creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan — Lane throws his star power behind a multicam sitcom about three gay men living in a Palm Springs mansion, despite the many potential pitfalls along the show’s road to success. In the series, which is produced by Ryan Murphy and directed by “Cheers” and “Frazier” visionary James Burrows, Lane stars as a bra magnate who invites his platonic soulmates, Jerry (Bomer) and Arthur (Graham), to move in with him and his mother ( the late Linda Lavin) after the loss of a mutual friend. In reality, Mutchnick and Kohan, who based “Will & Grace” on their real-life friendships, reportedly set out to create a show tackling aging as a gay man, taking inspiration from members of their current social circle, many of whom reside in Palm Springs.
