‘Megalopolis’ Debuts At Cannes With 7-Minute Standing Ovation
Francis Ford Coppola's dystopian epic Megalopolis had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16.
This Cannes debut is an important platform given the film does not yet have North American distribution; ahead of the festival’s opening earlier this week it did pick up major international territory deals, and Imax has confirmed rollout plans for the movie. Alongside Coppola this evening were the film’s stars including Driver, Plaza, Emmanuel, Shia LaBeouf, Giancarlo Esposito, Kathryn Hunter, Laurence Fishburne and Chloe Fineman among others flooding the Palais. Megalopolis is a Roman epic fable, set in an imagined modern America, where the city of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests and partisan warfare.
